Landfill Projects

ALLIED WASTE/BROWNING FERRIS INDUSTRIES * SUNSHINE CANYON LANDFILL, SYLMAR
JMA provided paleontological and archaeological segments of 3 different EIRs for this project, including expansion from the City of Los Angeles Landfill into the Los Angeles County Landfill, as well as the planned expansion from Los Angeles County Landfill back into the new City of Los Angeles Landfill. JMA has provided archaeological and paleontological services on this project from its conception in 1980 to present.

In 2004 JMA's services were expanded to include construction biological, paleontological and archaeological mitigation monitoring services; CEQA compliance management; project management and coordination; monthly, semi-annual and final project reports for each phase; pre-construction biological, paleontological and archaeological surveys for the landfill extension and expansion; and SWPPP/BMP management and inspection.   All of our services at Sunshine Canyon have involved close and effective coordination with ACOE, USF&W, CDF&G, Los Angeles Regional Water Quality Control Board, and the City of Los Angeles. The project will last until 2050. This is a very controversial project.

SANITATION DISTRICTS OF LOS ANGELES COUNTY * PUENTE HILLS LANDFILL,
PUENTE HILLS

JMA is providing the Los Angeles County Sanitation District with inconstruction archaeological and paleontological mitigation monitoring services; project management and coordination; weekly and semi-annual reports for ground disturbance activities and landfill expansion at the Puente Hills landfill.

OPERATING INDUSTRIES INC. * MONTEBELLO LANDFILL
Hydrogeologic Investigation of a Superfund Site where a large volume of toxic liquids were unaccounted for.- This study was initiated to determine possible leachate pathways and contamination of the Los Angeles Aquifer. in order to construct appropriate hydrologic models, JMA conducted a biostratigraphic and lithostratigraphic study to determine the age and appropriate formation units for the onsite stratigraphic units and to determine the paleoenvironment at the time of sedimentation for each unit to determine the mode and style of deposition of the sediments. JMA was able to determine that there was no possible contamination of the vital Los Angeles Aquifer from the landfill.
